Multi-million dollar upgrades to Nitmiluk National Park continue as the Visitor Centre reopens and construction of the much-anticipated mountain bike trail begins

The Nitmiluk Visitor Centre re-opened in July following an extensive refurbishment, the first since it opened 20 years ago.

The makeover is part of the NT Government’s $10 million investment into developing new infrastructure within Nitmiluk National Park to attract more tourists to the Katherine region.

Nitmiluk National Park attracts around 270,000 visitors a year and the Visitor Centre is where most travellers begin their journey.

The upgrades include a new, modern kitchen, renewed bathroom facilities and extended outdoor seating alongside design elements that reflect the landscape and tell the story of the park and the Jawoyn people.

Stage two of the centre upgrade began in August and includes an interpretative display, visitor orientation information and the Welcome to Country experience.

The design will incorporate Jawoyn history and culture ‘front and centre’ as well as provide interpretation of the natural values found at Nitmiluk and is expected to be complete early next year.

Other planned developments at the park include upgrades to the first gorge cross-over Wet Season path, a new Katherine River crossing and an upgraded 17 Mile Valley track to support Nitmiluk Tours’ new Biddlecombe Cascades glamping experience.

The new jetty is close to completion with work starting on the ramps that link the jetty to the river bank. Testing and commissioning is due to be complete in early December

The tender to construct the new mountain bike and shared use trails was awarded to Ground Creations, with construction beginning in late November.

Jawoyn Contracting is providing assistance to the contractor to complete this exciting new network of trails on the Park.

Work to build the new lookout and stairs on the Baruwei loop walk is expected to begin early next year.

Rangers are busy preparing the Park for the upcoming wet season at the moment

This includes planning for a number of wet season prescribed burns that have been identified during the year.
